MA Roofing Contractor Cited for Fifth Citation Related to Falls in Eight Years

OSHA cited the company for four willful and two serious violations and proposed penalties totaling $137,196.

For the fifth time in eight years, a Massachusetts roofing contractor has been cited for violations relating to falls.

After an investigation found workers of The Roof Kings LLC at risk for falls at heights from seven to 21 feet, according to a news release, OSHA cited the contractor for four willful and two serious violations and proposed penalties of $137,196.

The agency said that no fall protection was provided, workers were not trained on these hazards and hard hats were not given out. OSHA also alleged that The Roof Kings LLC had a ladder at an incorrect height, did not make sure that workers could climb up a ladder with one hand while hauling items and did not “have a competent person” perform inspections, the news release said.

The Roof Kings LLC was cited four times from 2014 to 2016 for violations at other worksites in the Boston area. In a settlement agreement in 2017, The Roof Kings LLC agreed to pay remaining penalties and use “abatement procedures.” However, in 2021, after allegedly “failing to honor” the agreement, OSHA said, The Roof Kings LLC was found in contempt. “The department’s Office of the Solicitor is currently engaged in ongoing proceedings on the matter with a Special Master appointed by the First Circuit,” the news release said.

The most recent citations were contested.
