Selecting the Proper PPE

Selecting the Proper PPE

The type of PPE an employee needs depends on the job and hazards.

Personal protective equipment or PPE is essential in all manufacturing jobs. This kind of safety gear provides protection from injury from minor cuts, bruises to major accidents. A lot of times, people using the wrong PPE can actually cause more harm than good. Wearing the proper PPE is a must when it comes to working on any job site. Below is a basic guide to making sure you have what you need to keep safe and comfortable.

Earplugs

Earplugs are a great way to protect your hearing from long-term exposure to loud noises. Earplugs should be used every day when you work in areas with high noise levels or if you anticipate working around loud noises for an extended period of time.

Respirators

Respirators are designed to protect workers from inhaling certain airborne contaminants such as dust, vapors and gases. Respirators are available in a variety of styles and types. Depending on the kind of work you do, you may need to wear a half-face respirator, which covers only your mouth and nose; or a full-face respirator, which also covers your eyes and ears.

Prescription Safety Glasses

Prescription safety glasses are designed to protect your eyes from dust, debris or chemicals. They are also used to protect you from the sun's harmful UV rays. These prescription safety glasses come in a variety of styles and lens tints to help you find the perfect fit for your needs.

Hardhats

Hardhats are used by many workers in construction, utility and industrial settings. A hardhat is designed to protect your head from falling objects or other hazards. It can be made of plastic, fiberglass or metal. Some hardhats have a built-in suspension system that distributes the weight of the hat evenly on your head and neck, reducing pressure points that cause discomfort and fatigue. Some have adjustable straps to ensure a snug fit.

Safety Shoes

Safety shoes for the workplace are designed to provide a secure footing on slippery surfaces and prevent injuries from falls or punctures. It's important that you choose the right footwear for your job because your feet will be exposed to all sorts of hazards during the day.

Jump Suits

Jump suits are the most popular form of PPE used in the oil and gas industry. This can be due to their durability and cost effectiveness. They are available in both full-body and half-body styles, with or without hoods. Jump suits are made from a variety of fabrics, but cotton is the most common as it absorbs moisture well and dries quickly.

Gloves

Gloves are another piece of PPE that will protect you from injury on the job. The most common types of gloves used by construction workers are leather gloves or heavy-duty cotton gloves, but some people prefer rubber gloves because they provide better grip than cotton or leather. Rubber gloves also protect your hands from chemicals and oils used in industrial settings such as manufacturing plants and auto repair shops. There are many different styles of work gloves available today that range from simple cotton work gloves to specialized latex gloves used by dentists during dental procedures.

Face Shield

Face shields are typically worn by workers who come in contact with potentially harmful chemicals or particles. They are constructed of clear polycarbonate plastic and offer protection from the eyes, nose and mouth. Face shields also offer protection from flying projectiles. It is important that face shields fit properly to ensure maximum protection.

Conclusion

The selection of PPE is an important process and one that should not be neglected. Health hazards are a reality in any workplace, as are the dangers of slips, trips, falls, and exposure to certain agents or situations. The proper use of PPE can go a long way towards mitigating those risks.
