Nominations for NIOSH Award for Hearing Loss Prevention Recognition Still Open

The Safe-in-Sound Award recognizes organizations that help prevent hearing loss.

Thousands of workers are exposed to noise hazards every year, potentially affecting their hearing.

In 2019, 14,500 workers lost their hearing to work-related hazards, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate of worker hearing loss has been decreasing over the past decade, but there is still more work that can be done.

Over the years, companies have continued to innovate ways to reduce worker hearing loss. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), with National Hearing Conservation Association and the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation, recognizes these organizations for excellence in reducing hearing loss with Safe-in-Sound awards. Nominations for the 2023 awards are still open, per a press release.

There are two categories for the awards: excellence and innovation. To be awarded the excellence award, organizations must have “exemplary hearing loss prevention.” The innovation category is for organizations with advances and solutions in hearing loss prevention and challenges.

Award winners will receive the award at the Annual Conference of the National Hearing Conservation Association and their stories are also featured in press releases, according to Safe-in-Sound’s website.

The original deadline for nominations was June 8, but applications are now open until August 15, 2022.
