A large part of being a successful safety professional is leading others in programs and policies put forth by you or your team. Influencing others is not a trait that comes naturally to most, however. "How to become an effective leader," is a question that has floated around history for a long time now. In fact, if you Google “qualities of a great leader,” you get a little over 200 million results in less than one second.
The abundance of information on the internet does not make the question any less pertinent, however. For many tasked with the responsibility of safety and health at a workplace, they find themselves in need of characteristics and traits that an effective leader would embody in order to exemplify the safety culture desired at a company. But what are the qualities of a great leader and how can these qualities help in changing desired outcomes in a safety and health program?
