Report Shows Injury Rate at Amazon Warehouses is Up From 2020

In 2021, nearly 40,000 workers were injured, report says.

A report that uses data submitted to OSHA shows that Amazon’s injury rate for 2021 was up by 20 percent from 2020.

According to the report from Strategic Organizing Center (SOC), nearly 40,000 Amazon facility workers sustained injuries in 2021. The report lists the serious injury rate that year as 6.8 per 100 workers. For other warehouses, the injury rate is reported as 3.3 per 100 workers.

In the same year, Amazon’s warehouse workers totaled nearly 33 percent of all warehouse workers in the US. Per the report, Amazon facility worker injuries accounted for 49 percent of all reported injuries.

The report also notes that injury rates at robotic Amazon warehouses were higher than at non-robotic warehouses, with a serious injury rate of 7.3 per 100 vs 5.7 percent per 100. In 2020, the serious injury rate at robotic warehouses was 6.1 per 100.

SOC is an alliance of Service Employees International Union, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Communications Workers of America and United Farmworkers of America. According to their website, they represent more than four million workers total.
