Take Precautions to Stay Safe During Thanksgiving Amid the Pandemic

Safety comes first when hosting gatherings for Thanksgiving this year.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching during a surge in COVID-19 cases, there are precautions that must be taken for those who plan to gather with family for Turkey Day in order to prevent further spread of the virus.

Health organizations such as the CDC and the WHO recommend that people stick to small gatherings for Thanksgiving celebrations and avoid mixing households, according to the New York Times. Seventy percent of coronavirus transmissions happen in the home due to poor ventilation, so it is suggested that people open windows in their homes while they host guests.

“This may not be the time to have a big family gathering,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci. “That doesn’t mean no one should gather for Thanksgiving. It’s not going to be one size fits all. You’ve got to be careful.”

Holding Thanksgiving dinner outside could also help prevent infection, as well as getting a flu shot before you travel and bringing your own food and utensils to dinner, according to the CDC.

When hosting family members outside your immediate household, you should also clean and disinfect surfaces often.
