OH&S SafetyPod: Hand Protection: Hazards, Standards and Gloves, Oh My!

OH&S Editor Sydny Shepard sits down with not one, but two, members of the ISEA Hand Protection Group — Jill Clements and Matt Block — to discuss reducing the risks of hand injuries. Sponsored by Glove Guard.

In this episode of OH&S SafetyPod, are focusing in on Hand Protection. We work with our hands every single day and without them our occupational functions become severely limited. Since healthy hand function is essential to many tasks, the stakes are high for both employees and employers. In 2018, there was 286,810 non-fatal occupational injuries to upper extremities involving days away from work reported. Of those, 123,990 of them involved hands.

There are so many potential hazards to hands, including skin absorption of harmful substances, chemical or thermal burns, electrical dangers, bruises, abrasions, cuts, punctures, fractures and even amputations. To help us make sense of these hazards, common hand injuries and proper PPE for hands, I reached out to the International Safety Equipment Association, or ISEA.

ISEA is an association for personal protective equipment and technologies that enable people to work in hazardous environments. They are also an ANSI accredited standards developing organization. Members of ISEA are leaders in safety equipment manufacturing, testing and application and the perfect people for me to reach out to.

I was lucky enough to get into contact with the ISEA Hand Protection Group. These members have a seat at the table when standards are being written that affect hand protection PPE. They get a first look at the changes in standards, they influence the development of new standards and are kept informed on the developments of standards around the world.

I’m so excited to you to hear my conversations with not one, but two, members of the ISEA Hand Protection Group, Matt Block and Jill Clements. We talk about hazards, standards and gloves, oh my!
