OSHA has cited rubber and plastic manufacturer Sperry & Rice LLC for 44 safety and health violations at its plant in Killbuck, Ohio, and issued a total of $400,775 in penalties.

OSHA inspected the facility after receiving a complaint, and Sperry & Rice LLC was cited for failing to provide new hires with guidance on use and safe handling of hazardous chemicals. OSHA also cited the company for other violations, including failure to provide adequate personal protective equipment and fall protection and failure to train workers on lockout/tagout procedures.

"Employees are at increased risk when they are not adequately trained and effective safety and health procedures are not implemented," said Larry Johnson, OSHA's Columbus Area Office director. "Employers are required to train employees on their first day about on-the-job hazards and safe handling procedures, and provide personal protective equipment to keep them safe."

Sperry & Rice LLC has 15 business days after receiving the citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with the area director, or contest the findings before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
