Workplace Violence Toolkit Released by Oregon Hospitals Association

"At the end of the day, we all care deeply about keeping people safe while they care for the sick and believe that we should take all steps possible to reduce violence in our hospitals and health care settings to zero," OAHHS President and CEO Andy Davidson said.

The Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems has produced a toolkit to help hospital leaders and others prevent and reduce violence against hospital workers. It was developed in collaboration with other health care and labor stakeholders.

"We are proud to have worked in close partnership with the diverse group involved in this effort, and we believe that the resulting toolkit will build on hospitals' existing safety programs to ensure we protect hospital staff from violence," OAHHS President and CEO Andy Davidson said. "At the end of the day, we all care deeply about keeping people safe while they care for the sick and believe that we should take all steps possible to reduce violence in our hospitals and health care settings to zero."

The toolkit, authored by Lynda Enos, will help users:

  • Evaluate the workplace violence program and individual violence prevention practices at their facility or within their organization against current best practices in violence prevention
  • Identify and engage stakeholders and enhance the culture of worker and patient safety
  • Develop or strengthen their workplace violence program and policy by identifying processes that can be implemented to manage or control violence and can address the risk of violence proactively

The American Hospital Association's Hospitals Against Violence initiative also offers resources on combating violence in communities and hospitals at www.aha.org/hospitalsagainstviolence.
