Alaska Gov. Bill Walker issued a pair of proclamations on April 24 that declare May as both Building Safety Month and Water Safety Month in the state.

His Building Safety Month proclamation urges all Alaskans "to share knowledge, practice safe building methods, adhere to appropriate building and electrical codes, and keep our families and communities safe and secure." It cites the International Code Council by name and mentions the theme for the month: "Building Codes Save Lives," saying that this theme "encourages everyone to take the appropriate steps toward ensuring our structures are safe, and recognize the countless lives saved due to the implementation of safe building codes by our local and State agencies" and says state residents can use the month to commit to building safety and economic investment at home and in the community and to acknowledge the critical services provided by professionals who enforce and adhere to safe building codes.

The Water Safety Month proclamation asks Alaskans to educate themselves and others on water safety precautions, as well as to learn how to swim. It thanks the organizations involved in the National Water Safety Month Coalition for developing safe swimming facilities, aquatic programs.

National Water Safety Month is an annual awareness campaign coordinated by The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals with support from the National Recreation & Parks Association, the American Red Cross, and the World Waterpark Association.
