DOL Hosting Event for Ames Laboratory Workers This Month
Representatives of the Department of Labor's Office of the Ombudsman for the EEOICPA, the Ombudsman to NIOSH for the EEOICPA, and DOE's Former Worker Medical Screening Program will be on hand. After the presentation, staffers will answer questions regarding existing claims, provide claim status updates, and help workers file new claims.
The U.S. Department of Labor will host an outreach event in Ames, Iowa, on April 17 for former and current nuclear weapons workers and their survivors. Federal representatives from the Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation will discuss the new Special Exposure Cohort class of employees at the Ames Laboratory.
The event will take place at the Holiday Inn Ames Conference Center at Iowa State University beginning at 9 a.m., followed by staff availability from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CDT.
Staffers from the DEEOIC Cleveland District Office will provide a brief presentation about the new class, as well as information about the medical benefits available to approved claimants under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act, which provides compensation and medical benefits to employees diagnosed with qualifying illnesses as a result of their work in the nuclear weapons industry. Survivors of qualified workers may also be entitled to benefits.

To date, the compensation program has paid more than $258 million in compensation and medical benefits to eligible Iowa claimants and more than $14.7 billion nationwide.
