EASA Publishes First Opinion on Safe Drone Operations in Europe

The formal opinion is a step toward keeping drone operations safe and secure and the adoption of concrete regulatory proposals by the European Commission.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has published the first formal Opinion on safe operations for small drones in Europe. The formal opinion is a step toward keeping drone operations safe and secure and the adoption of concrete regulatory proposals by the European Commission.

The EASA opinion keeps the regulatory rules simple and focuses on the risks of drone operation. The requirements for safe drone operation then take a range of factors into consideration, including where the drone is flown, what model of drone is being flown, and by whom the drone is being flown.

"This regulation will enable the free circulation of drones and a level playing field within the European Union, while also respecting the privacy and security of EU citizens and allowing the drone industry to remain agile, to innovate and continue to grow," EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky said.

The opinion also combines product and aviation legislation by packaging consumer information and safe drone operation rules with drones themselves.
