Manufacturing Day 2017 Celebrated Nationwide

New research from McKinsey & Company, "Human + Machine: A new era of automation in manufacturing," examines new technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence and finds they are opening a new era in automation for manufacturers in which humans and machines will increasingly work side by side.

More than 2,000 events are taking place nationwide today as American manufacturers open their doors to the public on Manufacturing Day 2017. It is an initiative to educate students, educators, and others about today's manufacturing and to inspire the next generation of skilled workers. The American National Standards Institute recognizes MFG Day efforts; the event is co-sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM).

It occurs on the first Friday in October each year. Companies and community organizations may hold their events on other dates in October that work best for them, however.

ANSI cites new research from McKinsey & Company, "Human + Machine: A new era of automation in manufacturing," which examines new technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence and finds they are opening a new era in automation for manufacturers—one in which humans and machines will increasingly work side by side. ANSI also is hosting an Oct. 19 Joint Member Forum meeting starting at 9:30 a.m. in Washington, D.C.. Named Future Perfect, it will include a panel discussion, "Virtual Reality and Machine Intelligence," with speakers from IBM, the Consumer Technology Association, and IEEE.

Through the America Makes & ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative, ANSI also plans to issue by June 2018 an update to its Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing, which describes published and in-development standards and specifications for additive manufacturing and makes recommendations to address perceived gaps in standardization.
