LAFD Memorial Service to Honor 268

The Los Angeles Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony on Oct. 14 starts at 10 a.m. at the Los Angeles Fire Department Museum & Memorial in Hollywood, Calif.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is inviting the public to join civic and community leaders and friends and family of the LAFD at the Los Angeles Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony on Oct. 14, starting at 10 a.m. at the Los Angeles Fire Department Museum & Memorial, 1355 North Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood, Calif.

The public event will honor 268 members of the department.

LAFD was created as a fully paid municipal department in 1886 and now has about 3,500 sworn and civilian members.

On Oct. 2, LAFD Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas released a statement saying that at least seven of the department's members were off duty and attending the country music concert in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 when a gunman opened fire on the crowd. "At least two LAFD members enjoying the concert were struck by gunfire. Thankfully, their wounds do not appear to be life-threatening. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families and all of the people affected by this horrific and senseless tragedy," his statement said. The department did not release their names in accordance with privacy laws.
