CDPH Offering Online Cannabis Guidance

On the new "Let's Talk Cannabis" website, visitors can find information about legal, safe use and health information. An educational digital toolkit for local governments and community organizations will be posted later, CDPH reported.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently launched a health information and education campaign about legalized marijuana in the state and the potential health impacts of cannabis use. Senate Bill 94, the Medicinal and Adult Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act, makes it legal for adults 21 or older to possess, consume, and cultivate cannabis in California, and the sale of cannabis from licensed retail outlets will become legal Jan. 1, 2018.

The new "Let's Talk Cannabis" website is part of the campaign, as detailed in SB 94, describing the scientific basis for restricting access of cannabis and cannabis products for persons under 21; penalties for providing access to cannabis and cannabis products to persons under 21; potential harms of using cannabis while pregnant or breastfeeding; and potential harms of overusing cannabis or cannabis products.

"CDPH engaged in extensive conversations with stakeholders in California and partners in other states with legalized cannabis to target the most vulnerable populations and apply their lessons learned," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "We are committed to providing Californians with science-based information to ensure safe and informed choices."

On the site, visitors can find information about legal, safe use and health information. An educational digital toolkit for local governments and community organizations will be posted later, CDPH reported.

Separately, Gov. Jerry Brown has appointed Suanne Buggy, 45, of Sacramento deputy director of CDPH's Office of Public Affairs. She has been senior vice president at Ogilvy Public Relations since 2013 and served as assistant secretary at the California Health and Human Services Agency from 2011 to 2013, where she was deputy associate secretary for external affairs from 2009 to 2011.
