ANSI Launches Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standardization Collaborative

The collaborative also will focus on international coordination and adaptability in order to encourage the growth of the drone market, but it will not develop standards -- it instead will work to develop a standardization road map for the next year.

The American National Standards Institute this week launched an Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standardization Collaborative and has set its first meeting for Sept. 28 in Washington, D.C. Its mission is to coordinate and accelerate the development of the standards and conformity assessment programs needed to facilitate the safe, mass integration of drones into the U.S. national airspace system.

The collaborative also will focus on international coordination and adaptability in order to encourage the growth of the drone market, but it will not develop standards -- it instead will work to develop a standardization road map for the next year, identifying existing standards and standards in development, defining where gaps exist, and recommending additional work that is needed.

Quite a few standards are in development or already have been published that are relevant, according to a list on the UASSC website.

ANSI had announced the establishment of the UASSC in May 2017 after a meeting with drone stakeholders.

The first meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT at the National Housing Center, 1201 15th St. NW in Washington, followed by a networking reception at the same location. Participation is open to UAS stakeholders that have operations in the United States. There is no fee to participate, but advance registration is required. The draft agenda also is available on the UASSC website.
