FAA Begins EIS for New Runway at Charlotte Douglas Airport

CLT is the fifth busiest airport in the country

According to a news release, the FAA has begun an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a new parallel runway at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Flights at CLT are expected to grow at an average of 1.9 percent annually to a projected 740,000 by 2033.

The airport’s Airport Capacity Enhancement Plan recommends a 12,000-foot-long runway be completed by 2023. The EIS will identify alternatives in addition to the airport’s preferred alternative. It will also study the effects on operations if the runway is not built.

The FAA has given the airport a $3.75 million grant for the project.
