ExxonMobil Touts Best-Ever Safety Performance in 2016

ExxonMobil's new chairman and CEO, Darren Woods, says in the company's 2016 Financial & Operating Review that the company achieved its best-ever safety performance in 2016 and "strong environmental results," as well.

ExxonMobil's new chairman and CEO, Darren Woods, says in the company's 2016 Financial & Operating Review that the company achieved its best-ever safety performance in 2016 and "strong environmental results," as well.

"Operating safely, reliably, and in an environmentally responsible manner is fundamental to our ability to create long-term value," his message in the review says. "We rigorously deploy proven management systems at all of our facilities, continuously enhancing operational integrity and effective risk management. In 2016, we achieved our best-ever safety performance, underscoring our unwavering commitment to ensure that Nobody Gets Hurt."

A chart included in the review indicates ExxonMobil's lost-time injuries and illnesses rate (incidents per 200,000 work hours for employees and contractors) declined in 2016 to less than 0.05, well below the American Petroleum Institute's petroleum industry benchmark.

It explains that ExxonMobil's Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) is applied at all locations, and that at the company risk management means identifying major hazards, implementing multiple controls (including facilities, systems, and people) to mitigate risks, and assessing and discussing the effectiveness of safeguards.
