Miami Transit Accident Kills Construction Worker

One worker, Oscar Cabrera, 43, died from the fall, and a second man, Luis Perez, was injured, according to multiple reports. Perez was wearing a harness and did not fall to the ground; he clung to a ledge until rescued.

Media in Miami are reporting that a Metromover transit car struck a boom lift early Feb. 8, causing two workers to be ejected from the lift. One of them, Oscar Cabrera, 43, died from the fall, and the second man, Luis Perez, was injured, according to multiple reports. Perez was wearing a harness and did not fall to the ground; he clung to a ledge until rescued.

It happened around 1 a.m. The transit system's trains were not operating at that hour, and no passengers were aboard the train car at the time; it was on a maintenance run when the accident occurred, The Miami Herald reported.

Emergency responders were unable to revive Cabrera, Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius Carroll Jr. said.

Metromover is a 4.4-mile, electrically powered fully automated people mover system in downtown Miami. Major stops of the system include the American Airlines Arena, Bayside Market Place, Miami-Dade College and the Miami-Dade County School Board. Cabrera and Perez, 37, were working on the construction of a new downtown rail station.
