ILO Symposium to Explore the Future of Work

The April 6-7 symposium at its Geneva, Switzerland, headquarters will convene leading thinkers on workplaces of the future, technology and automation, sustainability, and young workers.

The International Labour Organization announced it will host a "major event" about the future of work April 6-7. ILO's "The Future of Work We Want: A Global Dialogue" aims to bring together leading thinkers across many disciplines to discuss factors such as automation and technology, young workers, and sustainability.

"The future of work is not pre-determined. It is up to us to forge the kind of future we want, which is exactly the topic of our event here in Geneva," said ILO Director-General Guy Ryder. "This event will be an important step to better understand the sweeping changes we are witnessing and to develop effective policy responses that can shape the future of work we want – a future guided by principles of social justice."

The event is part of the Future of Work Initiative launched by Ryder during 2013 and will be structured around the initiative's four "centenary conversations," which are work and society, decent jobs for all, the organization of work and production, and the governance of work.

On the agenda are an April 6 opening session speech by Ryder, a work and society session exploring how transformations in the world of work are affecting how individuals interact and how will societies manage those changes, and a special session on how young workers envision the future of work and how they will contribute.
