Second Meeting of FAA Drone Committee Set

The committee's main goal during the second meeting, which is open to the public, will be to review and potentially approve three task groups, including one to review issues related to the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments in regulating and enforcing drone laws.

The Federal Aviation Administration's Drone Advisory Committee will hold its second meeting on Jan. 31 in Reno, Nevada, as it continues to help the agency prioritize its efforts to integrate unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace. The meeting location is the University of Nevada, 1664 N. Virginia St.

The committee's main goal during the second meeting, which is open to the public, will be to review and potentially approve three task groups. The first task group will review issues related to the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments in regulating and enforcing drone laws; the second will consider technological and regulatory mechanisms that would allow drone operators to gain access to the airspace beyond what FAA currently permits under the Small UAS Rule (known as Part 107); and the third will consider ways to fund the expanded provision of services needed to support drone integration.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta created the panel as a federal advisory committee in May 2016, and its members first met in September 2016. They represent stakeholders that include unmanned aircraft manufacturers and operators, traditional aviation groups, labor organizations, radio and navigation equipment manufacturers, airport operators, and state and local officials.
