New Chief of ICAO Air Navigation Commission Appointed

Hajime Yoshimura will serve a one-year term as president of the ICAO Air Navigation Commission beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. It is the UN civil aviation organization's main technical body.

The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) unanimously appointed Commissioner Hajime Yoshimura earlier this month to a one-year term as president of the ICAO Air Navigation Commission, which is the UN civil aviation organization's main technical body. The commission recommends standards and recommended practices and procedures for Air Navigation Services for adoption or approval by the council.

There are 19 members on the commission who are nominated by specific ICAO Member States and appointed by the council. Yoshimura was nominated for the appointment by Japan and begins his term as president on Jan. 1, 2017. He has served as a commissioner of the commission since March 2013 and was appointed first vice-president of it this year after spending nearly 20 years with the Civil Aviation Bureau of Japan; as deputy director of its Airworthiness Division, he oversaw the development of national airworthiness and environmental standards and served a co-project manager of the certification of the first Japanese regional jet. He also oversaw Japanese air carriers as chief safety inspector from 2012 to 2013.

During his time with the Air Navigation Commission, Yoshimura has chaired the ANC Working Group of the Whole on Air Navigation Work Programmes Deliverables Production and been a member of the ANC Planning Team since October 2014. He will lead the preparations for the 2018 ICAO 13th Air Navigation Conference.
