More Than 70 Dead After Brazilian Soccer Team's Plane Crashes

An early report indicates authorities say the plane crashed as a result of an electrical failure.

A chartered plane carrying the Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense, with 81 passengers aboard, crashed Monday night, leaving more than 70 people dead. At least six passengers are believed to have survived, but Colombian authorities say rescue efforts have been difficult due to bad weather. The team was traveling to Medellin.

The plane, operated by LaMia, declared an emergency at 10 p.m. local time due to an electrical failure, according to reports. The team was expected to play in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday.

All Copa Sudamericana final activities have been suspended until further notice.
