AVO Training Showcases Cable U at Open House

The new Cable U facility offers training in three key areas of the "future proofing" process for new and aged power cables: cable splicing and terminating, cable fault location and tracing, and cable testing and diagnostics.

The Dallas-based AVO Training Institute, a Megger subsidiary, held an open house on Oct. 28 at its training facility and offices -- shared with Megger -- to introduce customers and safety trade media representatives to the new Cable U facility, which is located at the site and offers training in three key areas of the "future proofing" process for new and aged power cables: cable splicing and terminating, cable fault location and tracing, and cable testing and diagnostics. Officials at the Dallas company said it's a one-of-a-kind cable maintenance training field that cost more than $500,000 to create.

AVO trainers and other staffers provided a walk-through of Cable U, which welcomed its first classes this fall, and the facility. They explained that cables in many industrial locations are not well mapped by their owners and are sometimes prone to failure because of faulty initial installation, making it imperative for those employers to have technicians on staff or contractors who can safely locate, assess, and repair power cables.

A key market in need of this training and certification is the wind energy sector, AVO officials said, explaining that some wind turbine owners employed inadequately trained installation crews and now realize they could face enormous financial losses if their power cables fail.

The company also is offering National Electrical Code 2017 multi-day training courses.
