Ohio BWC's Innovation Awards Contest Entries Due By Sept. 30

Cash awards are available, and BWC's Division of Safety & Hygiene will select the finalists who will compete for the cash awards during the Ohio Safety Congress & Expo.

The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation is accepting applications until Sept. 30 in it Safety Innovations Competition, a contest that aims to encourage and recognize Ohio employers' innovative solutions that reduce the risk of workplace injuries and illnesses. BWC notes that innovations come in many forms: equipment, machinery, processes, and procedures, and it has created this video to explain the contest and its eligibility criteria.

Ohio employers must meet these criteria to apply:

  • Implemented an effective, innovative solution to improve an occupational safety or health issue between Oct. 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2015, and using it
  • Have an Ohio BWC policy number
  • Maintain active workers' compensation coverage with not more than 40 days lapsed in the prior 12 months
  • Be current on all money owed BWC

Employers may not re-enter an innovation previously entered into a BWC-sponsored Safety Innovation Awards competition. Cash awards are available, and BWC's Division of Safety & Hygiene will select the finalists who will compete for the cash awards during the Ohio Safety Congress & Expo. First Place earns $6,000, while Second Place wins $4,000, Third Place $3,000, two honorable mentions get $1,500 each, and the People's Choice winner gets $1,000.

Judging will take place in October and Nov. 1-Dec. 15, and the finalists are to be announced Jan. 9, 2017, and displayed at the Congress in early March.
