FAA Posts Guidance on Oil and Gas Extraction at Airports

The advisory circular does not create new requirements, but instead describes how they apply to extraction at federally obligated airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration has posted an advisory circular (AC) on oil and gas extraction on airport property. This guidance does not create new requirements, but instead describes how requirements apply to extraction on or beneath airport property at federally obligated airports.

The agency wanted to provide guidance on this topic, given that the number of airport sponsors interested continues to grow. Many of these sponsors want to use the extraction as a source of revenue.

Per the FAA news release, some of the requirements include seeking and receiving FAA approval of Airport Layout Plan changes for development before drilling begins; ensuring the extraction does not create a conflict; and getting fair market value payments for the oil and gas lease.
