NSC Says Drivers May Face Deadliest Memorial Day Weekend Since 2009

Traffic fatalities show no signs of slowing, according to the council

According to a press release, The NSC estimates 439 people may be killed, as well as an additional 50,500 will be injured during the Memorial Day holiday period.

That estimate would make the 2016 Memorial Day holiday the deadliest since 2009. In 2009, 462 Americans were killed on the roads.

These estimates come as a result of the preliminary estimates that show an 8 percent vehicle fatality rate increase in 2015 versus 2014. Summer is also a popular time for road travel, according to the NSC, with 9,750 people dying on the road in 2014 from May 24 and August 31.

“As Americans gear up for the most carefree months of the year, we cannot take our safety for granted,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “Driving is one of the riskiest things we do every day. Engaging our defensive driving skills and staying alert can mean the difference between attending cookouts and family parties or spending the evening at the emergency room or worse.”

The NSC has given recommendations for staying safe, including: using safety belts, designating a sober driver, getting proper sleep, and avoid using a cell phone behind the wheel.
