HHS New Rules Hope to Improve Child Care

The Administration for Children & Families proposed the new rules, which include new requirements for background checks and safety training for child care providers.

HHS announced that the Administration for Children & Families has proposed new rules to improve child care. These rules offer additional guidance on requirements established in the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 2014. The proposed rules will require states to invest more in order to improve child care across the board.

"Last year's bipartisan passage and signing of the child care law represented an historic re-envisioning of the Child Care and Development Fund program," said Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. "The law and these proposed rules will protect children by setting new requirements for background checks and health and safety training for child care providers."

"Parents deserve to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing their children are in safe care settings with knowledgeable staff," said Mark Greenberg, HHS' acting assistant secretary for children and families. "The new background check and training requirements in the law help give them that peace of mind."
