NTSB Confirms Found Wreckage is Cargo Ship El Faro

The ship went missing on Oct. 1 during Hurricane Joaquin

The NTSB has confirmed that wreckage found at the bottom of the ocean is the cargo ship El Faro. The wreckage was found Saturday in water east of the Bahamas.

El Faro went missing on Oct. 1 during Hurricane Joaquin, and all 33 crewmembers on board were lost. The NTSB has said that crews will continue to survey the area, with the goal being to locate the ship’s black box.

Before the ship sank, El Faro’s captain called in to report the ship had lost engine power.

Families have filed lawsuits against the ship's owners. One of the families alleged in their suit that the ship "had a history of losing power while under voyage and during hurricanes," according to a report.
