Two Kansas City Firefighters Mourned

"The tragic loss of two of Kansas City's firefighters is a reminder that our emergency response teams put their lives on the line for all of us every day," said Mayor Sly James. "Our condolences go out to the loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and we pray for recovery of the injured."

Two Kansas City, Mo., firefighters were fatally injured during a two-alarm fire response Oct. 12. The department identified them as Larry J. Leggio, a 17-year veteran, and John V. Mesh, a 13-year veteran. The city's flags are at half-staff this week to honor them, and City Council members will wear a symbol of support and observe a moment of silence during Thursday's meeting. Details on memorial services will be released as soon as they are available, according to the department's news release.

"The tragic loss of two of Kansas City's firefighters is a reminder that our emergency response teams put their lives on the line for all of us every day," said Mayor Sly James. "Our condolences go out to the loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and we pray for recovery of the injured."

Fire Chief Paul Berardi said the fire was reported about 7:27 p.m.

"We are disheartened to hear of the tragic loss of two of Kansas City’' dedicated firefighters," City Manager Troy Schulte said Oct. 13. "Today is a somber reminder that the work our employees perform in service to the citizens of our city can be dangerous and difficult. Each day lives are put on the line to make our city great. The legacy of firefighters Leggio and Mesh will not be forgotten."
