FSIS Advisory Panel Meeting This Week

Two subcommittee also will be meeting, one discussing strategies to reduce Salmonella infections and other improved detection of foodborne Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service's National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods and two of its subcommittees will be meeting in Washington, D.C., Sept. 9-11. The Subcommittee on Effective Salmonella Control Strategies for Poultry will discuss additional strategies FSIS could use to reduce Salmonella infections, and the Subcommittee on Study of Virulence Factors and Attributes that Define Foodborne Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli as Severe Human Pathogens will work to increase the scientific information available on them and discuss improved detection and identification methods for these pathogens.

The committee was established in 1988. It provides scientific advice and recommendations to the secretary of Agriculture and the secretary of Health and Human Services on public health issues related to the safety and wholesomeness of the U.S. food supply, and also provides scientific advice and recommendations to CDC and the Departments of Commerce and Defense.
