Marijuana possession and smoking for recreation became legal for adults in Oregon on July 1. It remains illegal to smoke pot in public, to sell it, or to take it out of state.

The law allows Oregonians to have 8 ounces of useable marijuana at home and 1 ounce in public. Four marijuana plants are allowed per household.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission on Jan. 4, 2016, will begin accepting license applications from individuals who want to operate retail marijuana outlets or commercially grow, process, or wholesale marijuana. According to the agency, stores are likely to open sometime in 2016, at which time adults 21 and older will have places to legally purchase recreational marijuana.
