NSC Campbell Institute Director Discusses Leading Indicators at AIHce 2015

John Dony discussed his research project that looked at how to effectively track and implement leading indicators.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Finishing up a successful day 2 at AIHce 2015 was John Dony, Director of EHS & Sustainability for the Campbell Institute at NSC. Dony's lecture touched on leading indicators via a research project the Campbell Institute has recently completed.

To kick off the lecture, Dony defined the leading indicator framework as "defining, aligning, and refining." By taking these three steps, a business can create a leading indicator that is proactive, preventative and predictive.

Much like the rest of his speech, Dony's mixed-method research project broke down indicators into three subsections: behavior-based, operations-based, and systems-based indicators. Leading indicators allow companies to be innovative and increase safety by identifying trends as they happen. Barriers to implementing these indicators come from a lack of consistency across different departments as well as an emphasis on lagging metrics, he explained.

In the research, a study looked at Cummins and how the diesel engine manufacturer was able to apply leading indicators across two completely different lines of work.

Going forward, Dony said the Campbell Institute hopes to map the key elements and systems for leading indicator implementation.
