Labor Department Grant Helps Laid-Off Millworkers

The $499,801 grant to the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development will assist about 100 millworkers who lost their jobs after a November 2014 storm caused the roof of their plant to collapse.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration has awarded a National Emergency Grant to the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development to assist about 100 laid-off millworkers who lost their jobs after a November 2014 storm caused the roof of their plant to collapse.

The grant totals $499,801.

The workers had been employed by Woodgrain Millwork in Prineville, Ore. According to DOL's news release about the grant, a storm on Nov. 14, 2014, brought heavy snow and ice to the area and caused the roof of the Prineville facility to collapse. Individuals who worked in the affected areas of the mill were put on temporary layoff status until the employer issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice on Nov. 25. The notice announced immediate layoffs for most workers, followed by smaller, rolling layoffs of individuals assisting with the shutdown process, according to the release.
