Stand-Down 2015 Comes to the Capitol Dome

Representatives of Turner Construction, OSHA, and Deputy Labor Secretary Christopher Lu will speak at the site May 6 about the importance of preventing falls.

Representatives of Turner Construction, OSHA, and Deputy Labor Secretary Christopher Lu will speak at the U.S. Capitol on May 6 about the importance of preventing falls, as part of this year's two-week National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. It began May 4 and continues until May 15.

Turner Construction and Smoot Construction are in the midst of a renovation project on the U.S. Capitol's wrought iron dome that has kept the dome wrapped in scaffolding for more than a year as workers repair cracks in the metal. Turner Construction is stopping work May 6 to remind those responsible for its completion and the nation that fall prevention is vital, according to the company.

OSHA representatives and Lu will join Turner Construction executives and safety experts at the event, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and end at 10:30 a.m.

Last year, more than 1 million workers participated in the stand-down, which was a week long and became the largest occupational safety event ever hosted, according to OSHA, which hopes to significantly increase participation by employers and employees this year.

New York City-based Turner Construction already held its 11th annual safety stand-down on May 4, stopping work on more than 1,000 job sites with more than 45,000 workers involved. Its stand-down included presentations on situational awareness and on controlling and continuously improving construction safety processes using the lean management concept of Plan, Do, Check, Adjust.

"Turner's Building L.I.F.E. approach strives to eliminate work site incidents through better pre-planning of construction activities and through initiating safety engagement at project pursuit," said Cindy DePrater, the company's vice president of Environmental Health and Safety. "As we stop work on more than 1,000 projects, we will deliver this important message and continue to drive a culture of safety on our projects."
