Treating marijuana the same as alcohol is impossible for several reasons. There are no measurements for marijuana impairment that relate across the board to how we understand alcohol impairment.

What Are Your Options As Marijuana Legalization Advances?

Join our one-hour Twitter chat starting at 2 p.m. Eastern today, Jan. 20, about the impact of laws legalizing recreational marijuana.

Measures legalizing recreational marijuana have been passed by voters in Colorado, Washington state, Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia in the past three years, and legalization bills have been proposed in New York and are expected in California this year. NORML reports that recent polls show 50 percent of adults in Michigan and 60 percent of Virginia voters would support legalization.

So the era of legalized marijuana, for recreational and/or medical use, is fully upon us. What impact are these new laws already having on employers and safety managers in the early adopter states? What options are there for employers that are determined to maintain drug-free workplaces?

Join our one-hour "Marijuana Legalization: What Safety Managers Need to Know" Twitter chat starting at 2 p.m. Eastern time today, Jan. 20, with Jo McGuire to get answers to these and to ask your own questions about the impact of this trend. You also can register here for McGuire's Feb. 18, 2015, OH&S webinar, "Keeping Perspective Through the Marijuana Culture Shift," which will begin at 2 p.m. Eastern, 1 p.m. Central, 11 a.m. Pacific time.
