New Gas Pipeline Safety Standards Coming from PHMSA This Year

The White House's announcement of a new goal to cut methane emissions from the oil and gas sector included a reference to the upcoming standards.

Natural gas pipeline operators can expect new safety standards this year from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, according to a Jan. 14 announcement from the White House.

The announcement of a new goal to cut methane emissions from the oil and gas sector included a reference to the upcoming standards. It said PHMSA "will propose natural gas pipeline safety standards in 2015. While the standards will focus on safety, they are expected to lower methane emissions as well."

In addition, the U.S. Department of Energy will continue this year to take steps to encourage reduced emissions, particularly from natural gas transmission and distribution.
