CSB Meeting on US Ink Explosion Today

The combustible dust explosion at the New Jersey company injured seven employees in 2012.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board has scheduled a Jan. 15 public meeting starting at 6 p.m. in East Rutherford, N.J., where the board will hear from teams investigating the 2012 combustible dust explosion and fire at the US Ink facility there; it injured seven workers. The board also will consider a report into the CSB's investigation of the 2010 anhydrous ammonia release at Millard Refrigerated Services, a warehouse and distribution center in Theodore, Ala.; more than 130 members of the public sought medical attention afterward.

The board will consider the CSB staff's presentation and lessons learned from the Millard ammonia release, how these incidents occurred, and how similar future incidents can be prevented or mitigated.

The Record’s Michael Copley reported in November 2012 that investigators focused on a newly installed dust collector as the "probable fuel source" for the explosion at the US Ink facility.
