FMCSA to Award $30 Million in State Grants to Advance Real-Time Safety Technologies

States are encouraged to apply for annual CVISN and PRISM grants

According to a news release from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), $30 million in state grants is available through two annual programs, each of which is designed to strengthen commercial vehicle safety by assisting states to modernize their technology infrastructure in order to more efficiently collect and disseminate real-time safety data to roadside inspectors and law enforcement personnel.

“Safety is our highest priority and we expect that truck and bus companies, and their drivers, are also focused on safety at all times,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.  “Providing our state partners with the most effective tools for identifying unsafe trucks, buses, and commercial drivers in real time is an investment that pays dividends in preventing crashes and saving lives.”

The funding is available through these two programs:

Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) - up to $25 million will be awarded to improve technological capability and promote the deployment of intelligent transportation systems applications for commercial vehicle operations.

Performance Registration Information Systems Management (PRISM) - $5 million will be awarded to further nationally integrate state commercial motor vehicle (CMV) registration and licensing systems.
