Passenger Vehicle Tire Safety Symposium Announced

Issues to be discussed during the Dec. 9-10 event include vehicle handling and dynamics after tire disablement, the identification and analysis of tire disablement-related crashes, tire registration and recall, tire aging and service life, recent advances in tire technology, tire maintenance, and consumer awareness.

The National Transportation Safety Board will host a symposium Dec. 9-10 about passenger vehicle tires' safety. The event takes place in Washington, D.C., and will highlight the importance of tires to the overall safety of passenger vehicles. Another goal is to gather facts and expert opinions to assist the board in four ongoing tire disablement-related investigations.

The symposium will be chaired by Board Member Earl Weener and will include invited subject matter experts who "will present on such safety issues as vehicle handling and dynamics after tire disablement, the identification and analysis of tire disablement-related crashes, tire registration and recall, tire aging and service life, recent advances in tire technology, tire maintenance, and consumer awareness," NTSB's announcement stated. A Q&A session will follow those presentations to allow NTSB staffers to follow up on points made during the presentations and take other tire safety topics into consideration.

The symposium will be held at NTSB's Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C., and it will be available as a live webcast, as well. For more information about it, visit www.ntsb.gov/tiresafety.
