OR-OSHA Student Safety Video Contest Under Way

The "Speak up. Work safe." video contest offers cash prizes and is open to Oregon high school students.

Oregon OSHA's annual "Speak up. Work safe." video contest is now under way. The contest is open to high school students across Oregon, with the top three entries earning cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500 and a matching amount for their school.

The contest is designed to increase awareness about safety on the job for young people. Entrants must create a 90-second or shorter video matching the overall theme -- "Work shouldn't cost you your future." Videos should emphasize ways for young workers to protect themselves at work, with submissions judged on the original health and safety message, overall production value (video/audio quality, acting, and editing), and effective use of the theme.

Feb. 2, 2015, is the deadline for submissions. The contest is organized by the Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition and sponsored by Oregon OSHA, SAIF Corporation, local chapters of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences, Hoffman Construction, Central Oregon Safety & Health Association, the Labor Education and Research Center, the SHARP Alliance, Oregon Health Authority, the Construction Safety Summit, Northern Lights Theater, and SafeBuild Alliance.

Winners will be unveiled at a screening event in spring 2015 and their entries will be posted on YouTube. Students are encouraged to use social media to spread the word about their contest entries with the tag #Oyesvideo.
