NHTSA Urges Millions of Car Owners to Replace Defective Airbags Immediately

The agency said its message is especially urgent for owners affected by regional recalls in Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, and Hawaii.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Oct. 20 posted a statement urging about 4.7 million owners of Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, and General Motors vehicles to act immediately on recall notices to replace defective Takata airbags. "The message comes with urgency, especially for owners of vehicles affected by the regional recalls in the following areas: Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii," it stated.

Vehicle owners can check by VIN number on www.safercar.gov/vinlookup to see whether their vehicles are subject to an open recall that needs to be addressed. In addition, consumers can sign up for NHTSA recall alerts, which go out before recall letters are mailed by the manufacturers to the affected owners.
