The proposed change would specifically mention PPE for the eyes, face, head, hand, foot, and extremities, along with protective clothing, respiratory protection, and protective shields and barriers.

Tweaks to PPE Standard Before CA Standards Board

The changes in General Industry and Construction Safety Orders are proposed for adoption Oct. 16.

Changes in the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board’s General Industry and Construction Safety Orders pertaining to personal protective devices are on the agency for adoption at the board's Oct. 16 meeting in Walnut Creek.

The proposed changes will adjust the list of specific PPE types that employers must ensure that they comply with applicable Title 8 standards. The orders will continue to require that PPE be "distinctively marked" and be used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

A provision that would be removed stated that the PPE must be "at least equivalent to those complying with the standards approved by The American National Standards Institute, Bureau of Standards, or other recognized authorities, except that where no authoritative standard exists for a safety device or safeguard, the use of such safeguard of safety device shall be subject to inspection and acceptance or rejection by the Division."

The meeting is open to the public and will begin at 10 a.m. The agenda is available here.
