NIOSH to Raise Awareness on #N95Day

The agency is celebrating Sept. 5 as a national health awareness day focused on increasing workers’ knowledge of respiratory protection with outreach that includes Pinterest-ready infographics, tweets throughout the day, and a twitter chat with NIOSH N95 respirator experts.

NIOSH is celebrating N95 Day on Sept. 5 and plans to raise workers' awareness of respiratory protection with several types of online outreach during the day. NIOSH-approved N95 respirators are the most common among the seven types of particulate filtering facepiece respirators; they filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles but are not resistant to oil.

The agency sees N95 Day as a national health awareness day. Its release about the day's activities notes that NIOSH estimates more than 20 million workers, in dozens of industries, are exposed to airborne health risks on a daily basis. The day's theme is "Respirator Preparedness: Where Technology Meets Good Practices."

Activities will include a webinar with NIOSH professionals discussing respirator preparedness in health care setting, an online blog, Pinterest-ready infographics, tweets throughout the day (#N95Day), and a Twitter chat (#N95Chat) with NIOSH N95 respirator experts. "It is vitally important that employers and workers know about the products they are using and understand how to use them properly for their workplace," said Maryann D’Alessandro, director of the NIOSH National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory. "N95 Day allows us to place even greater emphasis on making sure that accurate and actionable information is available for employers and workers alike."
