ASSE Hosting PDC in India This Month

The American Society of Safety Engineers is holding its first professional development conference in India -- May 26-27 in Chennai.

The American Society of Safety Engineers, the oldest professional safety society in the world, will be holding its first professional development conference in India this month. SAFETY INDIA 2014, will be held May 26-27 in Chennai. The conference's theme is "Advancing OSH to Save Lives." ASSE has partnered with the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. to hold the event.

The conference targets an attendance composed of the country’s safety practitioners from a wide variety of industries, such as manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, and automotive. In addition, the conference features a variety of safety experts, including local representatives from private and government sectors, as well as speakers from countries such as Germany, China, Spain, the United States, and Australia.

Topics of discussion for the conference include OSH best practices, global trends, OSH safety management systems, behavior-based safety, port safety, petrochemicals, construction, and road safety.

ASSE opened an Indian chapter in March 2012. The society hopes the Indian conference attracts several hundred participants. "The need for awareness, education and training, specifically best practices in occupational, safety and health, is significant in India," said ASSE President Kathy A. Seabrook. "ASSE's mission is to promote the safety profession globally. India is a great country where our ASSE members are making a difference. We are excited about this historic event and thankful to the Ministry of Labour and Employment of India, the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Consulate in Chennai, and UL for their support."
