Salmonella Detection System Wins Silver Edison Award

The 3M Petrifilm Salmonella Express System was just one of the safety products honored April 30 in the 2014 Edison Awards competition. Products from Kimberly-Clark, Sonomax, and Starkey Hearing Technologies also won.

The 3M™ Petrifilm™ Salmonella Express System received a silver Edison Award in the Edison Awards' Science/Medical section's "Detection" category, 3M announced May 1. Another company innovation, the Two-Phase Immersion Cooling Technology using 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluid, earned a bronze Edison Award in the Applied Technology section's "Industrial Productivity" category. The awards are a global competition for honoring exceptional creativity and ingenuity.

Kimberly-Clark Corporation's SCOTT® 24 Hour Sanitizing Spray won a silver award in the Applied Technology section's "Safety" category. The spray cleans, disinfects, and sanitizes in one step, killing 99.9 percent of the most common bacteria and also disinfecting against viruses, including Norovirus.

Sonomax's patented self-fit hearing protection device won the gold award in the Lifestyle and Social Impact section's "Personal Wellness" category.

Starkey Hearing Technologies' Xino Tinnitus device, a treatment option for tinnitus sufferers, won a bronze medial in the Science/Medical section's "Assistive Devices" category.

According to 3M, the nominees were judged by a panel of more than 3,000 business executives, including previous winners, academics, and leaders in product development, design, engineering, science, and medicine.

3M describes the Salmonella system as "an all-in-one test method for the rapid detection and biochemical confirmation of Salmonella in enriched food and food process environmental samples." Users can obtain accurate results in as little as 44 hours. "We were very excited to launch the 3M Petrifilm Salmonella Express System last year because we knew it would be a breakthrough for food processors around the world and their ability to rapidly detect Salmonella, bacteria that are responsible for one of the most common forms of food poisoning," said Tina Bauman, global marketing supervisor with 3M Food Safety. "To be recognized with a prestigious Edison award is a meaningful validation that this new technology offers unprecedented benefits for our customers."

The cooling system is a highly efficient mechanism for keeping data centers' hardware cool.
