FEMA Announces 2014 Hazard Mitigation Grants

The agency announced that $112 million in funding is available through two grant programs.

FEMA has announced $112 million in funding is available for the 2014 fiscal year through two Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) grant programs—Flood Mitigation Assistance and Pre-Disaster Mitigation. According to FEMA, "These two grant programs assist state, local, tribal, and territorial governments in strengthening our nation's ability to reduce the potential cost of natural disasters to communities and their citizens."

The Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program provides funding for hazard mitigation planning, with a goal of reducing the risk of natural disasters to the general population and structures. It also aims to reduce reliance on federal funding from actual disaster declarations and focuses on implementing a sustained pre-natural disaster hazard mitigation program.

The Flood Mitigation Assistance grant program provides funding to eliminate or reduce the risk of flood damage to buildings insured under the National Flood Insurance Program. This year's grant will focus on mitigation planning and mitigating severe repetitive loss properties, according to FEMA.
