Biometric Screenings: The Key to a Healthy Workplace?

Three organizations work together to create a guidance tool for companies that helps them complete health risk assessments and biometric screenings

According to an article from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), three health organizations have partnered together to guide employers when it comes to gathering data through biometric screenings and health risk assessments.

The three organizations, which include the Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO), ACOEM and the Care Continuum Alliance (CCA), published the “Biometric Screening for Employers” statement in the October issue of JOEM.

Biometric screenings consist of tests that deliver information about a person’s blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and more. By doing them regularly, people can periodically assess—and hopefully improve—their health. The article discusses not only the rise in biometric screenings, but also how when combined with health education, the screenings can make for a better informed, healthier workplace.

Factors to consider when implementing a biometric screening program, according to the article, include the method for data collection, which population(s) will be screened, how privacy will work, what budget limitations exist and more.
