Due to Government Shutdown, Thousands of Aviation Safety Inspectors Furloughed

The Federal Aviation Administration announced the 3,000 furloughs after the Oct. 1 government shut down

According to an article from the Associated Press, as a result of the federal government shutting down on October 1, 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration is furloughing around 3,000 aviation safety inspectors.  The furloughs were reported by the union that represents the inspectors.

The inspectors, according to the article, typically make sure airlines maintain a safe fleet of planes, do inspections at airports and on planes and perform other safety tasks. In the past, employees that have been considered “critical to public safety” have been exempt from the furloughs.

The union’s national president called the furloughs that the FAA issued an “outrage,” according to the Associated Press. Some even thought the furloughs were a mistake,
