Nearly Half of FEMA's Community Preparedness Awards Go to Texas

Texas-Based organizations win 3 of the 7 Individual and Community Preparedness Awards

Out of seven winners from the 2013 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual and Community Preparedness Awards, three come from the state of Texas, according to a news release from FEMA. The awards were announced in conjunction with National Preparedness Month this September.

The organizations in Texas that received the awards were the City of Austin for its “Outstanding Community Emergency Response Team Initiatives,” The Heart of Texas Citizen Corps Council for “Outstanding Local Citizen Corps Council Initiatives” and The Texas School Safety Center for “Outstanding Achievements in Youth Preparedness.”

In addition to these awards, Stephanie Park for Community Preparedness Heroes, Texas School Safety Center and Harris County CERT all received honorable mention and are based in Texas.

According to the news release, the annual awards recognize innovative practices and achievements of people, organizations, and councils who work to make communities stronger and better prepared for disasters.
